Alright I know I don't post much on here anymore but sometimes I get online to look around and see whats goin on in here. Anyway, I thought I'd post something a little different from the norm. My question to ya'll is,

What handgun caliber, in your opinion, is best for defense and general shooting?

My vote goes for the .45ACP, but I'm probably biased, since I have a GI spec 1911. Sure, the .45ACP is a slower round than the 9mm, .40, and others, but it has a proven performance record.

What is your preference and why?

And if that's not enough, how about a debate on the 1911 platform vs the modern handguns (DA Glocks, XDs, etc.).

I'm happy with my Smith & Wesson M&P40. I haven't had the opportunity to shoot a .45ACP. My friend has a 9mm and it has noticably less recoil. The 40 is not difficult for me to handle in any way.

I can't advocate for one round or the other but I have heard good things about the 357SIG cartridge for auto-pistols--not to be confused with the 357 Magnum. The 357SIG is more or less the same size as a 9mm but with much more power and different ballistics.

If the 357SIG ammo becomes cheaper I will either purchase an M&P357 compact for a concealment gun and/or buy a barrel to be able to convert my 40 to a 357. That's all my gun needs for a conversion. My magazines are able to hold 40S&W or 357SIG.

As far as the platform. I have held 1911's and they feel good in my hand, but so do the newer platforms. My M&P has replacable palm swells for different sized hands so it can fit almost any sized hand. Also, a huge advantage of the newer models is the ability to carry more rounds. My M&P holds 16 .40 rounds while the 1911 holds 8 .45 rounds.

Personally I would say a .38 only because amo is cheap (if you can get your hands on it in the near future) I have a 357 Magnum best thing is it can shoot 357 and 38's so to me it is versitile, but what do I know I am no gun nut. Willie??

Prince, you rang?...BTW a 9 mm is a good round, and a 357 is also. Personal defence is a matter of what you want. I carry a 38 special 5 shot S&W model 32 air weight. With the thumb spur cut off(safety),but for just walking around in a mall, I have a Keltec 32,7 shot auto for deep carry. I also have a XD 45acp 13 rnds that I like.Bedside manor is a Ruger 357 speed six,4/1/2 inch barrel.I have carried a 1911,and can say that its a good sidearm, but when my son flew for the Navy,he carried a Glock 17 instead of a 1911(spray and Pray)Situations would make my decision which to carry, all are good protection. My favorite for just shooting is a Browning 9 mm BDM which hold 17 rnds, and shoots both double and single action.....oops,when the rebellion comes, I have a keltec plr 16,which has a thirty rnd mag.....with a carry strap, and is a pistole.

The caliber wars have been debated endlessly, it's always been the typical .45 vs .40 vs 9mm vs .357, the way i look at it is that i much rather have a 17 round 9mm handgun than a 7-8 round .45 or a 6 rounder .357 magnum anyday of the week.

For an auto, max charges in a 45 Auto with the 185 grain hp have been shown to be a consistent one shot psycho killer stopper. That would be my choice. For a revolver, 357 Mag with max loads and a 125 gr hp has proven over time to be the one of the best one shot psycho stoppers ever.

IMHO the 9m is a wimpy cartridge, and I would not trust my life to it. The bullet is to light for complete tissue damage. Too many stories of perpetrators having several 9mm rounds capped into them and still coming on to do the shooter damage. The whole idea of a defense round is to stop an aggressor with one shot, and the 9mm falls short.

The newer calibers I have no experience with and no data on, so I cannot comment.

Shot placement is what in reality determines a one shot stop, regardless of the caliber, now with that said, i personally feel you have more chances of hitting vital organs with a 17 round pistol in 9mm than with 7-8 in .45 ACP, IF you have the shooting skills of the average Joe, but if you are a top notch marksman you can the do job with a .22

I have all the above, but if I was in need of some actual firepower,my XD will do the job(45)13 rnds. The cemetaries in France, have a lot of troops thatw ere killed by 9 MM Scmieshers and Walther p38's....Fn also supplied german troops with the browning style 9MM with 15 rnd clips.I keep a 357 revolver for home defence, along with other stuff scattered around the villa.
