Our upcoming September issue of ATV Magazine (mails out July 14th, newsstands August 4th) is our annual hunting issue and it's packed with great stories, including a hunting-type build project on our new camo Grizzly 550 with power steering.
Putting it together, we spent a lot of time thinking about the greatest ATV hunting and/or fishing destinations - where a quad is a part of the journey, and not just for driving across a parking lot.
We've done turkey hunting in Oklahoma, lots of deer hunting and the Sept. issue has a great feature on bear hunting in Canada. But, what's the greatest ATV hunting or fishing trip you've been on? Or, do you have one you've always wanted to do, but haven't found the time for?
I'm hoping to put together a fly-fishing trip in western Montana with the president of St. Croix Rods, Paul Schluter. He's an old friend, and it's a great excuse to try some awesome, top-end rods.
We're always looking for our next destination. What's your ultimate ATV hunting or fishing trip?

I know nothing about Fishing, only thing I ever caught when I tried to fish was a buzz.
As for Hunting, most people I know White tail Deer & Turkey hunt and occasionally Bear hunt. Most serious Deer hunters, when asked where they would like to hunt, most will say one of (3) places. Texas, Iowa or one of the Canadian places like Saskatchewan or Alberta. Most trophy Deer hunters want to go one of those places but caint afford it, myself included.
Other than that, Kodiak Island in Alaska would be my dream hunt for Brown Bears.
I use my quad every single day during hunting season, usually to get to & from my stand, game retrieval which includes using my winch to fetch a Deer that I couldnt drag up a hill by myself, food plot prep, tree stand & equipment hauler. Quads are invaluable in a hunting situation but can be the most annoying thing in the world when your neighbors feel like trespassing.

Nate - I think you should look in Utah for sure. Let us know if you are out here and we can take you on a good ATV ride with some good hunting

We used to have a place here called the Ohio Power Lakes. It was an old coal mining area of 8,000 acres or so that was pocketed with more than 700 small to medium sized ponds and lakes, owned by (of course) Ohio Power. It was a great area to fish and ride quads and dirt bikes. It had everything: good gravel pit and woods riding, lots of mud holes, and great fishing for largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish, pike and pickerel, and some of the largest bluegill and crappie in Ohio. The largest bass we caught there weighed 8.5 pounds. 5 pound channel cats were common, with 8-10 pounders not rare. Northern pike of 30+ pounds inhabited some of the larger lakes, but were never lucky enough to land one. We did hook a few and lose them to broken line or bent hooks.
We used to primitive camp and spend a week of vacation time there every summer, at minimum. A free permit was required to gain legal access to it, although many did not bother to get the permit. AEP bought Ohio Power, and now there is no access allowed. It is posted and patrolled by Sheriff Deputies. Trespassers are taken directly to jail and their quads or bikes confiscated.
We spent many days fishing and riding there in the '80s and '90s. It is a sorely missed recreation spot.

Calling a illegal immigrant an "undocumented worker" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmicist". Both are criminals!

Do you know anyone in the AEP system? They are my biggest customer and Ive heard if you know the right people legal passes can be purchased for hunting & fishing, dont know about quads. The liability aspect might prohibit such but I dont know. I do know they offer it to some of their higher end employee's. Theres an area somewhere near Muskingum River plant that I know sells limited passes, could it be the same place you are talking about?

No, I do not know anyone with AEP. And yes, the area I spoke of was over in the south-eastern section of Ohio, but I do not know where the plant is you speak of, so I cannot say if it is the same. I too have heard they now use it as a executive retreat, but the public is not invited. Never heard anything about them selling permits. I think it was the quads and bikes more than the hunting/fishing that got it closed to us. I am sure AEP was scared of liability.
