I believe you spelled the manufacturer name wrong. Is it Qianjiang? A picture, model number. Is it 2 or 4 stroke. This information would make it a bit easier to direct you in the right direction. First off if you bought the machine new from a distributor I would start there first. If you bought it 2nd hand (used) you will definately be in for some research and lots of phone calls.

I guess I should have been more specific in my reply. Did you just use aerosol spray carb cleaner or carb dip (typically comes in a 1 gallon can that you can submerge the entire body and individual parts? If you just used the spray can it is still fairly possible an internal passageway has some gum, dirt, or varnish (from sitting) partially restricting an air or fuel passageway. I just want to confirm this to rule out ANY of those possibilities. I have found the Mikuni VM series (what you have) carburators to be very touchy to tune and any slight variation of "perfect" settings can cause drivability issues.

I would have to agree with Camo Fox, however it is fairly possible that the air screw vibrated out it is rare but happens. Also I must inquire about your methoud of cleaning the carburator. Did you dig it. If not you cannot asume that you have every passage clear.

I think you need to start from scratch. The hydraulic braking systems on ATVs and motorcycles is probably the most overlooked general maintenance item. Most people don't realize that the brake fluid should be changed every 2 years or so. Brake fluid attracts water, water causes corrosion. Being your machine is a 2000 model and I would probably assume the brake fluid has never been changed you probably have corrosion in the entire system. Read my blog article for more information Brake system maintenance You probably just need a master cylinder rebuild kit (o-rings and piston). But first try disassembling the master cylinder and cleaning and inspecting the parts, flush the lines and disassemble the calipers as well. Bleed the system outlined in my blog.

Without seeing and taking it apart it would only be a guess that the previous owner removed an idler gear or something. And you are correct ATV and MC starters do not have a bendix drive that push the starter gear out to mesh with a flywheel ring gear, there is just no good way to package that type of unit in an ATV/MC unit because of the primary drive to the transmission. Every unit is different but they are all kinda built and operate the same way. I am sure after taking the off the engine side cover I am sure you will see the culprit. Post a picture up I would like to see what it looks like in the flesh on your Artic Cat. The starter clutch is bad. More specifically the springs that hold the little "pucks" from sliding back in forth during normal operation got weak and the "pucks" have probably scored up the mating surfaces of the starter gear (mounted to the crankshaft) and the clutch face itself. Thing of it is. Most people don't like other people spamming forums with posts/threads "Disguised" as customer testimonials. Just like YOURADHERE said, chances are it is the starter solenoid. To find the solenoid follow the positive lead off the battery to a oddly square shaped object that has one heavy gage lead off another terminal and a wire harness pigtail with two other wires off the top. First double check all your connections from the battery to the solenoid and the solenoid to the starter, clean them throughly and check for corrosion, don't forget to check/clean the negative grounding cable as well. To test the solenoid take a short piece of 12 gage or heavier wire (some people will use a pair of slip joint pliers). "Jump" the solenoid by touching one end of the wire to the terminal post that the cable from the battery attach's to the other post that attach's the cable that runs to the starter. If the starter spins this indicates that the solenoid is bad. If nothing happens or the starter turns slowly three possible problems could still exist. 1. Battery/starter cable(s) have internal corrosion or break in one or more strands (not visible) causing excessive resistance (and it does not take much with MC/ATV electrical systems) You can try and test with a Ohm meter the cables resistance and compare the values to new cables, but this is not always conclusive as proper resistance of a "new" cable lies within a broad range that unless the cable is so corroded internally there will not be enough of a difference between the two values to make a firm determination. If the ATV in question was over 10 years old it would be just wise to replace the cables anyways. Solution: Replace both cables if in doubt. 2. Weak battery, common causes, old age, improper storage, frequent discharging/charging, over extending the charging system with other loads (high power lights ect...) water level low on flooded type batteries, normal discharge, or a faulty voltage regulator. Solution: Charge battery with a low amp (less than 3 amp) charger, for storage of long periods (1 month or more) of time invest in a float charger to maintain 12.5V in storage. Doing so can almost double the life of the battery. The 3rd reason is related to number 2. One or more dead cells or broken plates. Flooded batteries are more susceptible to broken plates from vibration than "maintenance free" sealed or spiral core "gel" batteries but both can develop dead cells. Dead cells reduce the availble "on demand" amperage required to spin a high amp load such as a starter motor. (typically 15-20 amps for MC/ATV's and upwards of 30-40 on automobiles). Batteries with dead cells will still take a charge and register 12-13V on a volt meter. The only way to test for dead cells is with a load tester with a setting for mc/atv batteries. This can usually be done for free at most auto parts stores and dealerships. Solution: Replace the battery

Could you give a little more info on the starting issue? Will the engine turn over? Does it just click? Will it turn over but not fire/run? I and others will need more info to make a possible diagnosis and recommend a potential solution. The simple "It doesn't start" problem can be taken a few different ways. With the chain "tensioner" I am assuming you are talking about the urethane roller that is attached to the frame that the chain rolls on under extreme suspension sag and not the elliptical hub that houses the axle bearings and axle (that actually is the chain adjuster). That part is available through many sources such as Your local dealer, Bike Bandit, Dennis Kirk and many others. The part should run around $10-$15.

How long has it been since the coolant has been changed? Over time coolant looses its themal efficiency. As a rule coolant in MC's and ATV's should be changed about every 2 years. Also there is a good procduct that claims to be more themaly efficient at transfering heat, Engine ICE, also Redline makes a product that you ad to your existing coolant that claims to break the surface tention of the coolant thus alowing better themal efficency. You may want to try that upon refilling the system. Some machines actually have a themostat in the cooling system (like a car) for purposely maintaining engine temperatures (specifically in the winter time) It could be failing as in sticking closed or not opeining at the correct temperature (later) causing elevated engine temps before it opens to allow coolant to the radiator. It is also possible that the water pump impeller is damaged or has a broken vane thus the coolant flow is not optimal. I would start with a flush (with distilled water) and refill with a quality coolant (Engine ICE or equivalant) purging the air properly and see if that does the trick. You have not tried these then. The 8511 is not a cheaply made filter mask. The RZR mask looks like a good quality product that probably functions well, but at $30 for the mask and 6.95 (3 pack) for replacement filters that seems a bit steep for something that is not NIOSH and ANSI approved to filter. The 8511 filter costs around $1.50 ea +- depending on where you get it. Where as replacement filters themselves are $2.31 plus the $30 start up cost. Now if your racing desert races all the time and are in need of a inexpensive (relative to fresh air systems) filtration system that looks better than a white mask and can afford it I think the RZR mask probably would be a good choice. Otherwise for an average rider that might hit the desert only a few times a season an inexpensive 3M 8511 or bandanna is far more practical. Now if you want to send one to me for testing. I will write up an honest review with pros and cons and throw it up on the Blog site. Oh and welcome to the forum, feel free to contribute other ATV/off road information.

But who wants to fumble around all day with those bulky pieces of junk when you can have something nice compact and comfortable that stays in one place all day long even with your helmet on. You know a 3M 8511 filter mask is more or less the same thing for about $16 a box and you get 10 in a box. The 8511 has the exhaust valve on the front. Those filter masks are real "goon" apparel.
