RE: Artic Cat now offering powersteering...

Hi all,
This winter brought up a similar conversation with the others drivers at my job.
It was my first winter in my new Volvo tractor. I love it, nice, clean, quiet, powerful, everything works. It has the usual speed governor but also has this stupid governor that won't let you pull past 1,500rpm, if the trucks computer doesn't think you need it. Meaning it just stops pulling and forces you to shift up. There are instances when taking off on flat that's fine. But I can see a hill coming the truck can't. So you are forced to shift up and lug up the hill or hold the gear flattened out until the truck senses you are going up the hill and full power kicks in. Not a big deal, but can be annoying.
Also it has traction control. My other tractors had it also, but it never worked. My first snow storm in this new tractor I ended up shutting the traction control off running through the hills. I felt it was keeping me from building up good enough speed to get up the hills.
There were other trucks stuck, some were guys from my work. There are lot's of variables, dual axle or single axle (like mine), load weight, etc.., but having the tcs system off worked best for me. It has it's purpose in some situations, but being able to shut it off and run with out it is good.
Of course I have heard older drivers talk about how I got it so easy with driving stories like tractors with no power steering, having to shift with both hands with twin stick shifters, dual speed rear axles, noisy, drafty cabs, etc....and of course tractors having no A/C.
Does that make me a *****, I don't think so, I'm glad I didn't have to deal with that crap.
Just think there are people out there driving on the road now and there will be even more, that have only driven a small vehicle with all wheel drive or front wheel drive, ABS, TCS, airbags, back up sensors/cameras, stability/roll control, run flat tires.
Is vehicle technology breeding *****s?
Is it bad that some people have or will maybe never experience loss of rear wheel traction, almost flipping over, skidding out/spinning around, wacking their face on the steering wheel, etc...
I'm sure dirtbikers said the first three wheelers were for *****s, and then the three wheeler riders said the first quad riders were *****s also.

RE: My Jeep becoming more of a toy

Beautiful day to spend 7 hours on the driveway under my heep to replace the whole clutch, slave thow out bearing, intermediate pipe etc...
Took it for a on road, and mild local off road test. All was good, even better shifting than before.
Still want to try to hook up an e-brake, re-tighten stuff and I should be good to go.

RE: My Jeep becoming more of a toy

Thanks!
jhess, on my hydraulic clutch it's a combo slave/throw out bearing that is leaking inside the bell housing. That one part I've seen range around $100.00. Since i got to take the trans out, I'll just replace everything. A complete master clutch kit I got is just $200.00.
Thanks, but those gears won't help me.
Unfortunately the weather looks rainy this weekend. I'm gonna get wet and grimey.

RE: My Jeep becoming more of a toy

Well it's not a major a leak. But it is in the bell housing.
Got to flex the suspension at least. Could have gone a little more.

RE: My Jeep becoming more of a toy

I'll check the clutch fluid level today and see how bad and if it's leaking inside or outside the bell housing.
Sucks because the synchros in my trans are kinda junk. The trans in my red parts Heep (sitting on it's axle housings now) shifted real nice.
So if it's not leaking bad do i wheel it carrying a bottle of fluid?
Take it apart r and r clutch parts with the current trans?
Or pull the trans out of the red Heep and put in the green Heep with new clutch parts?
Just when i thought I was almost done!

Last time was about eight years ago. A guy got so drunk he almost pissed on my living room floor. Not cool.

RE: going going gone

That sucks, but I hear you.
Like you said, it is a discouraging situation about owning and riding an ATV (or anything motorized and for off road use) in our area.
I went years in my 20's and 30's, without any kind of toys (ATV's, streetbikes, fast cars, Jeeps, etc...). Had other, mostly priorities, and intrests at the time.

RE: What new feature would you like to see developed on Utes?

If you look at the new Can Am's they have a air compresor and air ride
Got to check that out.
I always thought that would be a great idea. And have like 3 modes/settings, mud (raised), rock crawling, off camber, hills, etc.. (auto leveling), and sport (lowered and firmed).

RE: My Jeep becoming more of a toy

Finally I got to drive it down the road this morning. Got it up to 50 mph and all was good considering no shocks or front swaybar is hooked up yet and the front end is eyeball alligned.
I'll get the shock mounts welded this weekend and be ready for a good test/break something run.
