RE: which is the best 400 (trx, kfx, dvx, ltz)???

And you also didn't catch mine either. You said that the Z weighs more, swingarm is not as good, doesn't handle as good, and the only advantage the Z has is FI and water cooling.I read what you said and got your point but seems like you didn't read and get mine. The Z is heavier but the engines HP makes up for that, also it is wider than the EX,better STOCK shocks, swingarms are both equal in handling just the EX has easier adjustment. The Z is just an all around better quad, not saying the EX is bad.I have owned a couple EX's and they were very good bikes, but no real changes since they came out in 1999.It's really all about prefernce but stock for stock and spec for spec the Z is better,I would rather take the extra weight and have a faster, better handling, more updated bike. That little bit of weight only matters to hardcore racers like drag racing and track racing. Are you sure that the swigarms are exactly the same? Did I actually say that the Z was not an all around better quad? You sound defensive about the 17lbs of extra weight. You didn't mention the higher cost of the Z either I noticed. By the way, how much wider is the Z? How about wheel base? For the difference in cost between the two, I got the upgraded shocks and revalved the back shock for some inexpensive "Sweeeet". Next will be the flexx bars, but no motor mods, and only change in the intake, jetting, and a pipe.

RE: What's Your Favorite Big Bore?

Firsy off, i wouldn't find it as fun riding a quad in the snow as much as a snow machine; try keeping up. In Alaska, I would really be more inclined to having a Polaris 850XP or a Thundercat so I could pull atv trailers or sleds out to the wilderness on scouting or hunting trips, or panning expeditions. I've never ridden either, but they seem very robust to handle that terrain, and have the power for heavy towing.

RE: which is the best 400 (trx, kfx, dvx, ltz)???

The z400 does weigh more but puts out more power also,I would rather take more power and weight over lighter and less hp. Water cooling and FI is not the only advantage the Z has over the EX,up until recently the Z had reverse and the EX didn't.The Z also has dual over-head cams and higher compression engine vs the air-cooled single-overhead cam lower compression EX. Like yourad said, you can't compare your 450r shocks to the stockers on the Z,we are comparing stock for stock. Again did not fully catch my point. Not comparing front 450R shock to stocker on Z.

RE: which is the best 400 (trx, kfx, dvx, ltz)???

Suzukis ride well and have a nice ride, but the 400EX handles better overall . This goes against virtually everything I have heard and read over the past few years, whether it be in forums, or in magazine reviews. Looking at the basic specs, the Suzuki should, by all rights, outhandle the 400X. I have ridden both, but only briefly, so I can't give a verdict myself based purely on experience. Most mags these days tout the Z400 as being one of the best handling sport quads you can purchase, praticularly in the trails. Its even been compared to the sharp handling 450cc class race machines, especially since Suzuki tweaked it last year...or was it two years ago? I can't recall. The basic specs say the Z400 outways the 400 EX, and the recent addition of fuel injection caused the gain of 3 more pounds. Negative effect in the comparison column. The swingarm on the Z is way outdated compared to the better design of the EX swingarm, which effects handling, again adding to the negative in the comparison column for the Z. The only advantage before fuel injection was watercooling, which was the cause of the difference in weight. As far as stock shocks, only the front ones are better on the Z. With comparable aftermarket front shocks on each, the handling edge goes to the 400EX. Most Mag articles use the watercooling, fuel injection and adjustable front shocks to put the Z over the top in comparing it to the EX. With my modified 450R front shocks I would compare my 400EX favorable in handling.

RE: which is the best 400 (trx, kfx, dvx, ltz)???

Suzukis ride well and have a nice ride, but the 400EX handles better overall and has a higher quality level, IMHO. I dont know about riding better because the shocks on the zuki are way better than the 400ex but that engine is bullet proof In statement about the Z400 shocks, in a comparison against the Raptor 700, it's suspension was the highlighted weak point, minimal adjustments and performance limiting. Thats if you stay stock. Ask youradd if he kept his Z's shocks stock. If both have same level aftermarket shocks what than? I say the 400EX handling dynamics are better.

RE: What's Your Favorite Big Bore?

Try this I love the scenery and would love to ride the terrain, but not on tracked out quads. Snow machines would do it so much faster, fuel efficient, and with better traction. Like my brother in law in Alaska, I would have snow machines for the winter, and quads for the summer. My big bore quad of choice in Alaska would be the Honda Rincon. Honda first because of its legendary quality and reliability to get you there and back again, especially when your life could depend on it. Rincon second because compared to all the other brands I have ridden, it has the best handling and comfort, and I highly prefer the transmission performance over any CVT belt driven one. You would have to have ridden a Rincon to know what I mean. The Grizzly 700 is reputed to have the best belt driven transmission, and after having hours of seat time, still do not think it compares to the Rincon's tranny operation. In Alaska, quality wins out in the decision making process.

RE: New family member, but an old friend

I am rather sold on the stockers because I haven't found any aftermarket as light, but have given thought to 14' rims with 25' terracrosses. I also like the 4 Speeds from Maxxis and think they would be very suitable on the H/M trails.

RE: Ocala National Forest ride - Florida

I agree that the Hatfield/McCoy were great trips that I had taken, although only at Matewan and the Historic bed and breakfast. Great pics and vids from those trips, but am still trying to figure out how to get the vids posted properly. Hey yourad, I also can relate a spectacular wipeout that I experienced at the Jacksonville sandlot, and have a good friend who was riding with me as witness. It a was long sand dune rise that flattened at the top before dropping off, and it had a short build up to the rise to kick up the speed. In my approach, I was winding it out high in the topend and just shifting to third when I topped the rise. I didn't let up on the throttle at the top as all of my prior trips up this hill, and the front end started coming up from increased traction I guess, and it quickly went vertical. I should have stayed with it and taken off the throttle or used foot breakage to bring it down, but instead I found myself involuntarily bailing and flying through the air arms spread wide with my feet first. My friend was right behind me viewing all of this, and said it was like in slow motion. It really was a cool sensation until I landed hard in the sand shoulder blades first and than the back of my helmet. Needless to say, I was breathless and shaking sand out of everywhere when everything came to stop. My friend quickly came up to stop beside me doing full belly laughs. The 400EX corrected itself the second the throttle was let go and it ended up riding down the hill on its own until it stopped at the bottom. It took me a few minutes before I could speak, but the first words I said were "Man that was awesome". We laughed until I could finally move again, and finished riding out the day. I will say this, the 400EX sure came out of that better than I did.

RE: Ocala National Forest ride - Florida

Yes, and It is a blast to ride. I recently took it to a large sand area located in Jacksonville Florida near where I work. It is about 1000 acres and some of the best sand riding I've seen, with deep pits, large hills, and jumps galore. Spent the day racing with my friend from work on one of the perimeter trails. He has an older YFZ450 with some mods, one being MX tires and a pipe. I really think though that it must not be jetted properly cause it runs hot. I was able to out do him in the loop because the stock tires on my 400EX got much better traction in the deep sand than his ITPs. Plus they were way over inflated. I recently went to Louisiana but did not bring the quads, since it was at the Thanksgiving time period. My brothers and I have not decided where the next Quad adventure will be, but my older brother wants to try Utah sometime in the future.

Ocala National Forest ride - Florida

After reading all the great ride stories from CC and friends, I had to relate one of my recent quad forays. My two brothers in Louisiana decided to bring it on over this way to SE Georgia to do some riding. My older brother brought along his daughter, making our ride group four. They came over just after Christmas towing their trailer loaded with my older brother's two Grizlies, and my younger's Rancher 420 ES. With the addition of me, we had to tow four machines, so we opted with using my F-350 dually. One in the bed and the three on the trailer. I had asked my older brother before in 06 to do the Ocala ride, but when they came over, they spent all their time at Orlando. Finally we were going to give the Ocala trip a try. It had been 07 since last time I had ridden there, and it had been a wide open area ride. We found it to be far more organized with a series of designated trails with numbers and loops of varying lengths. We chose the 17 mile trail, but got on the 47 mile somewhere in the middle of the first one. It looked greatly improved from the other times I'd ridden there, but also cost $10 per rider. Fantastic riding, and my older brother and I kept a competition going in the game of rabbit and hound. When he was the rabbit, I kept on his tail for most of the time, and had the dirty face to prove it. Ocala is mostly sand, and has less dust, and the trails have ruts that your wheels ride in that can almost lead you through the corners. Fast pace at times, but some technical tight stuff in the thick shrubbery. You have to watch out for the Palmetto roots, because at speed they about bounce you off the machine, and slower will wrench the bars to the side and off you go into the bushes. That happened to my older brother when he was trying to get away from me as the rabbit. I had to stop because I was laughing so hard. After he got untangled, he joined in the laughing as well, but not without it leaving a mark. I was on my Rincon, my older on his Griz 700, my younger on his Rancher, and neice on the Griz 550. My older bro and I kept racing and leaving the other two to catch up, and as we were zipping around this sharp turn, my brother in the lead did not see a small Black Bear on the out side of the turn. I guess being in late December and rather chilly, the bear was slow to react to my brother and started crashing off the trail when I got to the turn. My brother still does not believe me to this day. That segment of the trail was about 4 and a half miles long, and while we were stopped at the end waiting for my neice and younger brother to catch up, I pulled out my GPS for position update and found we were not on the right trail. So we reversed course and traversed to same segment again. It was the best part of the loop and the riding of the day. This time I got to lead, and left my brothers behind. Right before the area I say the bear, I came across two wild turkey and almost rode them down before they flew. Awesome sight. I will say this about the Rincon, with the one inch lower CG, and its steering geometry, it definitely handles better than either of my older brothers Grizlies. The 700 has way more power, and is quite plush to sit and ride, but has too much roll in the corners. The 550 has a similar feel in ride to the 700, but not as powerful as the Rincon. Before we loaded the trailer, My brother on his 550 wanted to race. So we did two runs, with me calling the first and he the second. I though the 550 would give me a race, but I easily won both runs. Don't read into this more than is there, I enjoyed riding the Griz's but I am very used to Rincon. The weather had been sunny and crystal clear, with the morning starting off at 31 degrees, and ending only moderately cool. We shed the heavy clothes during the ride, and it got to be quite pleasant. It was better riding than in the heat of summer where it can swelter with high humidity. There were maps available at the Ocala visiting center, and we were able to familiarize ourselves with the rules. There were alot of dog groups out in the area, and came across trucks with their dog kennels in the back as they tracked their dogs by the collar GPS. Ocala National Forest is definitely a multi use area.

RE: New family member, but an old friend

I didn't want the red when I got my Rincon, but I have seen where a guy heat gun removed all of the stickers from his red Rincon and bought those racing graphics and applied them in a way that looked really cool. I've tried other tires on my Rincon, but have kept the stockers (some recently replaced from buying the take offs from the Honda shop) and always seem to put them back on to juice up the ride. The wheel and rim combo are the lightest I have ever seen, and give the Rincon its best performance.

RE: Adding to my ATV collection.

another thing that would drive the choice of the Polaris 850xp is it having the power to pull an ATV trailer on campouts.

Current administration money policy.

I think the most detrimental policy of this current president is his money policy. Redefining deficit spending is only a small part of how dangerous this administration's money policy is to our solvency. Printing money to buy up the debt is ludicrous, and is setting the stage for Carter style inflation. Gold over $1000 an ounce tells us that the inflative pressures have begun, and the long held TARP money release is scheduled to peak in 2010, putting gasoline on the fire. China is strongly cautioning the US Treasury to stop the printing to prevent the dollar from losing too much value. A couple of highly respected economist have reported that the Obama policy is making the same mistakes that contributed to the severity and duration of the Great depression. We are dead on the same track followed by FDR, and how can we expect the economy today to react differently? This is proving that Kensyan economics is a twice failed policy. Let us hope and pray that we shift current policy toward a safer direction.

RE: Adding to my ATV collection.

I would not really go for the Thundercat due to handling concerns. But I am favorable to the Prowler with the 950cc motor. I do like what I am hearing on the 850XP's ride and handling. The concern I have is the overall weight, but am impressed with the robustness of the frame.

RE: Another Pain in the Azz Repair for the Grizzly.

It is hard to imagine no suspension on the quads of today, but those sure were bouncy tires, and were max on the floatation.
