Lots of mud riding in my favorite local spot.

Just put my XTRs back on the Rincon so I could do well at the local spot, Gilligans Island. Lots of water from the rain lately, and the property always seems saturated even in dry times. But when the mud has standing water, it gives better traction because the water keeps the lugs clean. Lots of riders out lately, and came upon one mud spot that this guys Polaris was so stuck it looked hopeless. With two extras, we were able to muscle the tires out of the mud's suction and with tow straps connected to a Grizzley, pull it out of the mire. It was a Polaris 400 with 27" mud tires, but he had toasted his clutch trying to turn the big wheels. Couldn't get it out on its own power, because it would even turn the wheels. Most of the good trails now have these deep rutted spots because of lifted and supersize tired ATVs come out and rut them in unusual spots. Every thing gets high centered going through them the first time. We mark them to warn us to skirt the ruts. Still lots of fun, and always get soaked. One of my guest, still a teen, showed up at home totally mud covered but with a big smile, his teeth the only clean spot on his face. I caught some heat from his mother the next night at church. Sure, we come home a covered mess, but there is no better way to relieve life's stresses. The Hondas have held up well to all of the mud and water. Go Big Red

RE: Buying My Wife's Quad

I know a guy who bought a 250 for his wife, and it wasn't anytime before she clammored for something larger. It doesn't matter how smooth a clutch is, it can still be popped to cause wheelees. The effort than would have to be around training your wife on how to shift and throttle effectively, and than just practicing it. I am as smooth as it gets on clutching now, but its from years of experience.

RE: Buying My Wife's Quad

I am trying to understand exactly what you want. Do you want a detuned quad for your wife? Or is it a shifting problem? The 400ex tranny is a synchronous transmission and can be shifted without the use of a clutch. It is all in the timing of letting off the throttle after revving and kicking it up in the next gear, or throttling up to downshift. Other than a first gear start off, I just blip the shifter each time with my foot without using the clutch. That is up or down shifting. This is my practice when trail riding, but if drag racing, just keep it pinned and speed clutch the shifts. Just need to practice.

RE: Heads up Sir Lance, and WV!! Planning a trip!

I would love to be a part of this. I would want to upgrade my tires to the 4 speed maxxis or the ITP holeshots. They would be the best tire selection for that type of trails. I could see this as being an opportunity to record for posterity the joys of trail riding with kindred souls. I thik it would be entertaining. It could be done like "Fishers World", but we'd call it "Chris's World".

RE: Well, poor pitiful me is heading back to Jericho Lake

I have to ask you again Chris, how does the new Rincon compare to the previous one you owned. How did the FI and extra cc's translate into power, and how does the way the new power through the Torque Converter affect the handling? In ATV mags they always say the Rincon seems small in the big bore comparisons, but I find the power is in balance with the whole package to make it an enjoyable ride on the trails. What is your synopsis?

RE: Two more trips of local riding.

I'm over in Camden county near Interstate 95 by the Florida border. Here civilization is only a thin vineer on the forest land. This "Gilligans Island" is actually a large property between Kingsland and St Marys and has been an Offroader's destination for years. I just did another extended ride there yesterday, and rode until dark. Met new people who had just bought new machines and were trying them out, and prior met friends who love to race around playing fox and hound. Maybe its experience or skill, but I am great at both, and it could also be my knowlege of the area, even in the late evening. This is what is great about the sport, finding commonality with strangers who love to ride.

RE: Artic Cat now offering powersteering...

Power steering is a great innovation for those on a multi-day riding trip, and the anti-feedback from bumps to the handle bars does save alot of fatigue on the arms. I can see the need, but also see the need to make a more non-fatiguing thumb throttle. Four days of racing around on our last ATV adventure in Ark and Miz pointed that out. Lets see a little more of that innovation for this problem. My younger bro wants a PS Grizzly, and I'm leaning for the 850XP.

RE: Went on a little tune up ride today.

How did the two wheel drive 400EX do riding on all of that ice? did you have many spinouts? Imagine how the ride at Matawan would be on a sport quad like the 400EX. It is a little more challenging on the really steep trails to ride the two wheel drive quads, but every where else is a blast.

RE: Pansys are in bloom here and its not spring yet.

I think differently on the tea party effect and the republican party. The tea party push will actually make the liberal side of the republican party uncomfortable, because it is a big block of votes and money. It is a growing movement, and it has as its aim to put forth conservative candidates instead of the liberal ones that the movement do not back. Remember the election in New York 21 where the repubs were pushing that rino woman, and Sara Palin came out for the conservative candidate that was a distant third. He ended up subplanting the repub candidate who dropped out but backed the democrat she had been running against. The battle is in the republican party between the conservatives and the democrat light people. The democrat party is feeling the the shift in public attitude toward them and the president, and it is not positive. The Republicans are feeling the discontent for them as well and are shifting toward the tea party through its influence from the average american voter who hates what is being done to this country by out of touch politicians.

RE: Pansys are in bloom here and its not spring yet.

Hey woodsrunner, know of you from another site and am a Rincon rider like you. I lean in the Tea Party movement direction too, but would define it more as a grassroot conservative movement within the Republican party, among independents, and conservative Democrats. This will, as in the days of Reagan, cause a shift of the nation to the right politically. I see most media outlets slight the tea party folks, and have nothing but scorn for the simpletons who populate this movemet, and Sara Palin who they see as the predominant poitical figure involved. I do not see this as a start of a third party, but as a conservative Political Action Committee with growing clout. Growing stronger every day with all the public appearances of the POTUS and Queen Pelosi stories of abuses with taxpayers money. Before long there will be an "Anger Meter" displaying public sentiment of Washington politicians.

RE: New family member, but an old friend

These are fitted to the Renegade for good reason. I would get the lightest aluminum rim I could in 14" and stay with the 25" tires. That would be the setup on my Rincon for a H/M trip.

RE: Just toolin' around........

Going through that brush made me nervous for your camera setup. It would be great to have a mount that you could make that would put it higher on top of the rack above the reach of the brush. It would also give height to the view for better perception for the viewer. I would say your trial run was successful and did not have any shuddering or vibrating from a loose mount. Can't wait to see more. I go to the atvnation website alot, and the members do an excellent job of posting vids which I live for when unable to enjoy the real thing. Go forth site leader and set the standard for this forum.

RE: What did the election in Mass. say?

I would have thought BHO would tack to the right to save what is left to his presidency, but all I saw was more defiance and a dressing down of those he saw as in the way to his marxis type policies. He actually chastised the SCOTUS for an errant assumption he made about their ruling on campaign finance restrictions. After doing some research on what the Dems were angry about, I found that it actually levels the playing field between corporational political support spending and what the unions have been doing for years. This is not good for the Dems cause.

RE: What's Your Favorite Big Bore?

Bruce, lots of big-bore sales up here in New England as well. Some of the reason is price differential, or lack thereof. Deck out a 450-500cc ute, and you are not as far from the price of something 650ccs and bigger as one might think, especially when looking at Brute Force pricing. A lot of people feel if they are going into the $6,000 range, they might as well go to $7,000, and just get it over with, rather than starting with something midsized, and taking a bath when they go to upgrade a year or two later. Another thing we have here, which makes the big bores popular, is snow. The only thing that robs power as much as sand or sticky mud is 6-12 inches of wet, heavy snow. I know I'll never go back. Its a nice feeling knowing you simply will not run into a situation where you don't have enough power to get the job done, or even simply have fun. Oh, the midsized machines will get through, but they sometimes have to work a lot harder. also, once you graduate to the big machines, they generally sport the next level in brakes and suspension versus the smaller machines. Will there be enough sales to bouy the market from going out of business. How many atv mags are left now? Will the big 4 put much research and development money in a lagging sales segment. We've already had one powersport business in town close due to lack of business. ATVs, dirt bikes and side by side purchases are somewhat dependent on discretionary income, which seems under assault in the current economic times.

RE: which is the best 400 (trx, kfx, dvx, ltz)???

I don't think anyone here actually thinks 400Xs "suck", even YOURADHERE. What he DOES know how to do well is keep a thread going by throwing you a hook with a fresh worm on it...lol. The 400X is a fine machine, but the root topic of this thread is "which is the best." Given the competition, the award has to go to the Z400, almost by default. That said, turn back the clock a few years, and the 400X would be a serious contender. When/if Honda wakes up and gives the mill a refresh, increasing output and adding water cooling, as well as some better stock front shocks, and it will be a contender ofr the throne once again. Nothing wrong with a 400X. I think they are a blast, and I'd own one in a heartbeat, as I wouldn't have a need for more power, like many others. People like YOURADHERE go to the dunes, and spend time drag racing. I have no such interests. Most important to me is I am very comfortable on a 400X, as well as a 450R. The Hondas just seem to fit me best (personal preference). However, if asked which 400cc machine is the most "cutting edge", I'd have to give the nod to the Z400, plain and simple. I noticed you don't have a sport quad, are you only interested in the utes? Hey, the hook keeps this thread goin doesn't it. Not that we haven't reiterated everything contained in a myriad of other threads in a myriad of other sites for the last eight years..... I would own a sport quad, likely a 700XX, if I ever got the chance to ride in the warm weather. 99% of my riding is betrween 11/1 ans 2/28. Basically, you're either on snow, ice, water, or even worse, a mix. I need full plastics. A sport quad would be as useful too CC as a poopy flavored lollypop. Well I've ridden at H/M in November and the sport quad rides well there, and I would have to say the 700XX would be King.

RE: which is the best 400 (trx, kfx, dvx, ltz)???

I believe the word you are looking for is "paradigm", yes? Main Entry: par·a·digm Pronunciation: \?per-?-?d?m, ?pa-r?- also -?dim\ Function: noun Etymology: Late Latin paradigma, from Greek paradeigma, from paradeiknynai to show side by side, from para- + deiknynai to show — more at diction Date: 15th century 1 : example, pattern; especially : an outstandingly clear or typical example or archetype 2 : an example of a conjugation or declension showing a word in all its inflectional forms 3 : a philosophical and theoretical framework of a scientific school or discipline within which theories, laws, and generalizations and the experiments performed in support of them are formulated; broadly : a philosophical or theoretical framework of any kind ...just sayin.' I told you I was thinking outside the normal......

RE: frame color opinions

Black powercoating can come out very shiny and slick as if wet. Hard to beat! Try with yellow flame graphics in stretegic places and red plastic. That is unique. I have black plastic, and have thought about red frame.

RE: Ocala National Forest ride - Florida

Just got word from my brothers, looking at a May trip to Mena Arkansas where we visited a couple of years ago. Not the big trip, but a nice intermediate adventure. I am still doing the push for November H/M trip, and have a few more months to make my case. I do have all the prior photos and vids I will make available to them when I visit them next week. They are stored on a laptop and I have to transfer them to a thumbdrive. What is the website that highlights the H/M?

RE: What's Your Favorite Big Bore?

You know that in the marketplace, where people are purchasing atvs, the big bigbore machines are hardly selling. Most are the medium and entry level machines due to the price points and lessening of discretionary income. The ramp-up to bigger singles or twins has all but stopped awaiting the economy to return. It goes back to the fact that a capable machine does not depend on excessive power. It is an overall package that performs well and built on the premise of quality and value. That's what is moving people in their buying decision. That maybe in the south land but out west we need both that's why the new Twines are selling. In the two groups I ride with we have one new Renegade and four new 800Rs. Sorry 123kawi, 5 does not a concensus make in population total.
