RE: Trying To Talk The Wife Into Buying A Two-Up Machine.

Hey greygriz, its too bad the Grizzly doesn't come in the 2-up, but the laws seem to prevent that, shame. To me it would be between the Polaris and the Can-Am, and I favor the 850XP version because of the super stout frame. With two machines you can have more options on who you take riding with you, especially if they are new to the sport and do not have their own machine.

How do you take good action pics riding at night. Is there an inexpensive camera system that could be used in such situations. Are they impervious to mud and water?

RE: Lots of mud riding in my favorite local spot.

Another great night of riding at the "Island" playground. This is always a blast, because no one else is out there and don't have to worry that another atv could be coming around the other side of a sharp turn. My daughter and her beau were riding on the Rincon, while I led on the Foreman. We rode the outer circle trail that encompasses the perimeter of the property, about six miles of good riding. Than started to pick out the really interesting tight technical trails through the close trees and palmetta plants. Toward the end of the ride, took a trail that goes through the deep water, the place where in previous ride saw the water moccasin. There are people who bring out their lifted, oversized tired Brute Forces and dig out the trails with their deep ruts. In chosing how I was going to go through this one particular deep spot, I chose poorly, and hit a very deep set of ruts. The Foreman's front end submerged, I hit the throttle hard to bring up the front end and it seemed to take too long. The motor started to sputter and than quit. It was up to the seat level deep. I had the guy on my Rincon come around to face me in the front, and he pushed me backwards to get out of the hole. We reached dry ground and stopped, and locking the brakes on the back wheels, we pushed it upright to stand on the back wheels and the back rack. We did this to drain whatever water might still be in the carb and air intake system. Turned off the fuel petcock as well. This took about 15 minutes and than I lowered it back on its wheels, and attempted to start the motor. It just turned over with no spark. We ended up getting out the tow strap and pulling the Foreman around in 4th gear to turn the motor over and get any water out. After about a quarter mile of that, I reattemped to start it with the starter and it came around. I ran it hard for the rest of the ride to ensure engine temp would be high enough to evaporate any leftover moisture. By the time we returned to the trailer, it was running normal. Always plan my trips like this with multiple machines so can have ways get out of unforseen jams.

RE: Even more mud puddles +2 videos

Interesting vid bra, just want to see more. I have the same kind of water riding here in SE Georgia. I am seriously thinking of getting something like the video recording device you and Chris have. Still though, when we ride, mud seems to get everywhere including the top of my helmet. How do you protect your camera?

RE: Dems are so toast this coming November.....

This Thursday is the 15th of April and is Tax day. My wife and I have fallen off the deep end and have decided to attend the local Tea Party event in Jacksonville Florida. After hearing about this liberal group called "CrashtheParty" that intends to infiltrate the events discised as TPers carrying signs that mispell words, and they will try to get interviewed by TV journlist so they can say racist things and give the movement a bad name, we will be bringing our camera that records video so if we see such things we can record it. This is exciting to actually get involved in history as this movement will make the election of 2008 pale to the sweeping change that is coming in the house and senate from an angered electorate. Can you feel the energy that is building with every arrogant thing the current administration and congress do against the American people and the constitution.

RE: Dems are so toast this coming November.....

T Party is our only answer,my money will not be spent in vain..Lots of Repubs and Dems need the axe...I am sure it will happen after all the Boomers get rid of them..Keep up the prod, make them pay,
There are some Repubs I don't like per se, but am much more encouraged by their stand against the social justice Obama is espousing with his agenda. I would especially reelect any of the Repubs in the house, because I think they finally have gotten it, and are more aligned with governing with the consent of the governed.

RE: Forum Challenge

It's been awful quiet around here lately and I don't like it!
To everyone:
I challenge you this week to post 5 pictures of you riding!
I challenge you to recruit a new member!
I challenge you to post a favourite riding story!
I challenge you to post a video of you riding!
Let's get some good topics going guys and gals!
I agree on what is needed to spruce up the dialog at this site. Good idea warrior~kid.I keep going on these rides with people who do not have atvs to acquaint them to the sport, and have won some converts. I am helping one person to get through the types and brands of machines that would be a good fit for him. On all these mud rides I have not remembered to bring my camera for pictures, but also because we get so trashed with mud and water.

RE: Dems are so toast this coming November.....

I keep getting a "past due" bill from the NRC,well if they keep spending my donations in strip joints, and cat houses,I will continue to drop them into the trash.I will vote independent this coming year. We have a Republican Congressman in my district that voted for the first stimulus package, after he recieved 60%calls against the stimulus,he said"I felt like the country was in need"...he felt like the country was in need......he voted party line period,I think he will lose, and needs too!
I can understand your feelings on the Republican's past sins jhess, and the whole nation felt as you. Ergo the last two election cycles. But that is also what put us as a nation in the current situation. In the case of the local Repub, he may find himself in a primary battle with a TP conservative, hopefully, that will better represent the will of the people in your district. I could not vote for a democrat candidate from this point forward, because it would still empower the radical ravings of the current administration, and keep Nancy P in power. It has to be a new revitalized, conservative Republican party that shows up, or all efforts to force it to be so should be taken. I will sign on to the TP principles and make my voice heard to the local SE Georgia Republican party. Make sure you attend the April 15 Tea Party event in your local area, or your will definitely find the country in a more dire strait than it is now. I will start giving money to the Tea Party Federation to give it more power to influence the Republican party in selecting conservative candidates. Do not want another fiasco such as the situation in NY 21 and candidate Scazzafava, who was primaried out by the TP candidate and than backed the democrat candidate.

RE: Dems are so toast this coming November.....

Talk about rats abandoning a sinking ship, did you hear that Rep Stupak of Michigan has decided to retire vice battle out reelection in a hostile scenario. I don't blame him for throwing in the towel knowing the anger of the electorate after foolishly thinking he could vote for the terrible bill and not be held accountable. Obama and Pelosi have thought they are untouchable for now, but Reid is finding things a little less to his liking. There are consequences to the way representatives vote, especially when against the desires of the populous. They did not follow the constitution inspired truism to "govern according to the will of the people" or "govern by the consent of the governed".

Dems are so toast this coming November.....

Do you all have same impression that I do for the up and coming election? Obama and gang really went over the cliff with all of the shinanagans to fool the moderate democrats to vote for the terrible health care bill. Now don't get me wrong about there not being a few good things about the bill, but those are just the hooks to draw people into the scam and take their attention off of the real details behind the bill. The only thing is the people weren't fooled, except the foolish ones who always want someting for nothing, and have amassed themselves into the Tea Party movement. That movement has really taken off, and both parties are paying attention. This could be very interesting.......

RE: Lots of mud riding in my favorite local spot.

Today was an early morning ride with two of my slower riding friends, but we saw some good conditions and tolerable temps for mud and trail riding. It hasn't rained in a couple of weeks so alot of the water is evaporating from the trails and making it more dusty when riding in groups. I always ride in front so don't get as dusted, and determine the trails to travel. There are literally hundreds of trails to traverse so I always keep it interesting for those who come on the ride with me. I rode the 400EX for most of the time and had to stop on the trails to let the others catch up. One of my back tires went flat at the end and we had to return to the vehicles and park the 400EX on the trailer. One of the guys went home, so me and the other guy took my two utilities out on the trails that the sport could not get through. We found the deep water spots, and got stuck in a couple of deep mud spots. On one of our deep water forges, the guy behind me said that a water moccasin swam right by my machine as I hit the water crossing and he was reluctent to proceed until it was gone. I see them all the time when out riding in the water spots but pay them no mind. At the end of the trip all three of us were well covered in dust and mud. Another fine riding trip at the local "Gilligan's Island" trail and water theme park.

RE: Buying My Wife's Quad

One thing to consider when building your fleet of ATVs is with whom are you going to ride. The family must be the first consideration when deciding on size, type, and ease of operation so all will be happy. Also must take into account when your children bring friends along who may be less experienced. Than there are other couples who you and your spouse can entertain by taking ATVing, and possibly getting into the sport. I also consider my choices, to accommodate when I bring other men riders to the sport as my guests. I think I add two more ATVs eventually to my stable, and one of those will be a sport quad like the 700XX, and a utility such as the XP850 so I can pull an ATV trailor, or a side by side like the Rhino or Prowler.
One thing that I will not do is loan any of my quads to friends or neighbors who ask, because I will always be the one who heads up any trip on my machines for the sake of safety. Someone experienced has to put controls and dampers on the unbridled enthusiasm people get when riding other's quads. I also feel responsible for their wellbeing while riding my machines, and will enforce good riding practices they have to follow if in my group.

RE: Lots of mud riding in my favorite local spot.

In my last ride, at night, we just had to skirt the bad mud spots, but the 400EX took on all of the shallow water spots on the trails we rode. Did get a little splashed from the lack of fenders and such on the sport quad, but still tore around there like I always do.

RE: Utility aftermaket shocks.

As Honda's principle workhorse quad, its shocks have no adjustments and are built to take alot of abuse. The original wheels and tires were the same, with that workhorse toughness that rode very rough indeed. The new Maxxis tires are radials that definitely soften the ride, but the shocks could use an upgrade so that I am not pitched off the machine when riding in bumpy sections of the trails. Can you say pogo sticks?

Utility aftermaket shocks.

Riding my Foreman the other night with the new Grizzly wheels and Maxxis tires, I noticed a significant improvement in its overall ride and handling. It seems good shocks would actually make it a great trail rider, and with the SRA it has always had a good planted feel to the handling. Have any of you installed aftermarket shocks on your utility atvs, and what gains did you realize?

RE: Buying My Wife's Quad

The question about the best atv for the wife or even children is a good legitamate wonder...to be considered after we get our dream big bore of course. We think about ATVing as a family event, and even travel on vacations to good ATV locations just to enrich our familial memories. On the whole we see the sport as a purely male domain, but I have found there is alot of interest by women as well. Realistically women do not have the overtly aggressive nature of men and are not so driven to have the most powerful machine sold, and don't know the finer points on which is better... the Z400 or the 400EX. My wife likes the Foreman 500 I bought her when I bought my Rincon, and she tends to go around the mud holes while I, in the lead, plow right through the middle. It is easy to operate, and she likes the electric thumb shifting Honda has on the Foreman. It in all ways seems to just fit her. All females that accompany our family ATV rides seem to gravitate to the Foreman. My youngest daughter actually likes to ride the 400EX, but does not push it to the limit like I do. Women have a different mentality when riding than the stronger sex does, and finds fulfilment in the general occupation of riding in a group scenario. In my mind, the utility is more oriented toward women riders than the sport quads, but I'm ok with my daughter giving the 400EX a go. Honda has done very well with the 250ex package and it ends up being bought for wives and daughters. I am OK with that as well since my youngest daughter learned to ride ATVs on one. Still the medium sized utility seems most suited for the most flexibility in female riding scenarios.

RE: What is a Big bore ATV

So in praticality, a big bore would be above the 500cc range. My brother bought the Grizzly 550, and when riding at Ocala in Florida, he wanted to race my Rincon in a down and than a second leg back. I called the down, and he called the back. I trounced him both times. The Rincon is the least powered Big Bore, and stomped the 550 in two consecutive drag races. So maybe a Big Bore is all above 550cc.

RE: Two more trips of local riding.

Another great trip last night to the local atv hotspot know as "Gilligan's Island". Brought the same crew as last time except after dark. It is a whole different perspective to ride the same trails when in the dark. You would think that fox and hound would be less difficult in the dark since would have to have your lights on, but it proved difficult for the others to keep up. Some major boast were made by my riding compadres who vowed they could not lose me. Two times immediately I was able to shake them and double back around and come up behind them. It was fast riding with fair trails and very wet trails, and mud to boot. It was so much fun trading off between fox and hound, and the different machines. The Rincon was sweet with the XTRs on, the 400ex rode the trails like riding on rails and was the fastest, and the Foreman made a great showing with the Grizzly wheels and Maxxis tires. I know the place so well, and was circling and doubling back so often, that the compadres had no idea where they were. This is as good as SE georgia riding gets. The only thing better was the H/M trail on Buffalo Mountain. If any of yall ever make this way, you're cordially invited to participate.
