RE: Best Big Bore? You decide

What is a big bore I think it should have at lest 60hp. Why not take the word literally? The word "bore" is a unit of mrasurement, not power output. Looks like the Mag considers this any machine with 650ccs or more. I'd concur.

RE: Yfz450 or z400?!

i havent seen a z400 come out and be competitive in 2 years now and i dont see it happening, its a great bike no doubt but with todays 450s they just dont compete, ive ridden one on the track and its just all wrong for racing, even when this noe was widened and had minor motor work I don't see where the author stated he was going to race. You have a tendency to judge all machines based on how they do racing on a track. If someone is looking for a fast trail machine, all the rules are different.

RE: Honda rancher 350

Bighorns are great tires, but will be heavier than stock. If you have the extra dough, get aluminum wheels to couterract the extra tire weight.

RE: Honda rancher 350

In order to broaden your tire selection, purchase 12 inch rims....a much more standard wheel/tire size. As for the actual tire selection, what kind of riding will you be doing?

RE: Weekend fun

I think you need to put a seat on it. Just would seem safer to me. God forbid you ever fell backwards. Doesn't look very friendly back there.

RE: plowing & pulling

If your looking at new I suggest the the Suzuki kingquad, Yamaha Grizzly or Arctic cat (450-700CC) Absolutely not on the King Quad, unless you plan on going out and purchasing a VDI Copperhead ECM before working it. King Quads come off the showroom floor incredibly choked up, and quite frankly, out of tune....including the timing. This is all to pass emissions, but more importantly, it makes the engine run extremely hot. Same goes for the Arctic Cat 700, as it uses the King Quad mill. The VDI Copperhead fixes the timing, and the engine actually runs cooler from it, but even then, I would go out and buy a PWR high capacity radiator before I worked it. Basically, I just described $900 worth of upgrades neccessary to make the King Quad a good work machine, which makes it a bad choice. The rest of the machine is fine, but I see the temp light come on sometimes when trail riding at decent speeds in 20 degree ambient temps. I also clean the veins out on the radiator on a regular basis to ensure air flow is optimum. Had to tow 1badbanshee's Grizzly a few miles on mostly packed snow this winter. I kept a steady 10-12 miles per hour in low range the whole way, and it didn't seem to be working hard at all. Thought the engine might melt down. Light on...fan never shut off. I actually pulled the plastic cover off and threw a pile of snow on top of the radiator after we finally made our destination. For work machines, as far as I'm concerned, there's only two candidates, a Foreman 500 or a Rubicon.

RE: plowing & pulling

Your looking at new or used? The CVT belt system on most quads is very tough and works very well. I'm not a huge fan of the kawasaki or polaris ones however for low speed work conditions. Have had some belt issues when pushed hard. If your looking at new I suggest the the Suzuki kingquad, Yamaha Grizzly or Arctic cat (450-700CC) Used I like the Arctic cat 500 or 650 from 05-07. The had a stiff suspension, giant steel racks with many attachments available and a 2in receiver hitch for towing. If your on a tight budget then I like GreyGrizz's list of ATV's.I do agree with with you as far as the CVT drive system being tough and reliable for general purposes. And they do hold their own performing work. Even though most have low range, they still don't have the gear reduction of a conventional transmission. This causes the engine to work harder in some applications. I'll give you an example: My first quad was a 03 Yamaha Big Bear 400. I used it for work on the property, pulling trailers, plowing snow, etc. The hardest work involved pulling an eight disk harrow around on a two acre food plot we have. The Big Bear 400 was air cooled, but could drag it around for hours, with no problem. Kept it in the granny low 1st and about 1/3 throttle. In 05 I bought my Grizzly, and now pull the same implement with it. Now the Grizzly pulls it fine, but, the engine is revving much higher,(even in low-range) just to get in a good torque range, and the ground speed is a little faster. This results in the temperature light coming on after about a half hour. Sorry for the ramble, but my point is: even though the Grizzly has a much stronger engine, and is liquid cooled; the air cooled smaller cc engined, semi auto Big Bear, transfers power more efficiently to the ground, than the Grizzly, in this particular application. That's why I prefer geared transmissions on work quads. I love the Grizzly as a trail machine, but for work, I'd go back to the Bear, in a heartbeat. I'll second all of this. When it comes to grunt work, I'll take the geared transmissions any day.

RE: A question we all have seen before

Yes, the Brute has a power edge over either the KQ or the Grizz, and its not just a little bit. Once you equip all three machines with those big tires, the power difference will be more than noticeable, as the BF has a big torque advantage due to the fact is runs on two cylinders versus one. As for the locker, Kawis is my favorite setup in the entire industry, as its variable, and right there at your fingertips. The one drawback on the Kawi, however, is it has to be rolling to engage the 4WD system at all. If you are already stuck and at a standstill, you're stuck in 4WD, as front wheel rotation is a requirement for the front driveline to engage. With that one single exception, my choice would be the Brute all day long for a mudder over the KQ and Grizz...hands down. Keep in mind, however, that is one big exception.

RE: Question for Over30 and/or Sir-Lance

Thats a great deal, 1/2 price compared to new, and with the low miles you can almost call it new anyway. As Grey and YAH already stated Richochet are the way to go, a full set will set you back around $350. Tell your freind to not even ride it once before putting on those skids, hopefully the spar isnt already dented in anywhere. The outlander is a terrific quad but has the weakest frame on the market. I cant understand why Can Am doesnt fix that already. Before he bought it, he asked me to look at it, and the first thing I did was flip the machine on end and inspect the frame. Absolutely no damage. This is the newest looking quad I have ever come across that wasn't actually new. Gave him the info, Ricochet skids have been ordered. Thanks guys.

Question for Over30 and/or Sir-Lance

A buddy of mine just picked up a 2006 Outty 800XT. Thing is mont with only 600 miles on it. He asked my opinion, and for the price he got it for ($4,500), I told him if he didn't buy it, I was gonna. Anyways, he finally upgraded from a Rancher, and did it in a big way. The one thing I told him to do, before ever riding it, is to get full skids on the thing. What brand skids do you guys suggest for maximum protection? Don't care one bit about weight.

RE: Trying To Talk The Wife Into Buying A Two-Up Machine.

I also think that Arctic Cat is good than Polaris, still sometimes i feel both are good. doesn't matter as long as they are performing Well said! :h

Premixed but they took the oil injection line off? LOL, thanks I needed a good chuckle. Maybe the injection line is for nitrous?

RE: Forum Challenge

It's been awful quiet around here lately and I don't like it! To everyone: I challenge you this week to post 5 pictures of you riding! I challenge you to recruit a new member! I challenge you to post a favourite riding story! I challenge you to post a video of you riding! Let's get some good topics going guys and gals! I agree on what is needed to spruce up the dialog at this site. Good idea warrior~kid.I keep going on these rides with people who do not have atvs to acquaint them to the sport, and have won some converts. I am helping one person to get through the types and brands of machines that would be a good fit for him. On all these mud rides I have not remembered to bring my camera for pictures, but also because we get so trashed with mud and water. It should also be noted the GoPro cams, with their waterproof cases, can also take some very nice still shots. 5 Megapixel I believe. This shot was taken from less than 20 feet away with my GoPro. Not the curvature caused by the ultra-wide angle lens. The other is a similar pic from the same distance after basic cropping. In other words, stand closer than you think you have to when taking the pic. You'll get it all in. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/cchagros/GOPR0013-1.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v696/cchagros/GOPR0012-1.jpg The GoPro also has a self timer function so everyone can get in the pic.
